Book Description:

"Dark domestic suspense meets haunted house horror in this unnerving adult debut guaranteed to keep you awake for days afterward, from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Don’t Let the Forest In and Hazelthorn.

The walls are closing in on her perfect new life.

Single mother Elodie’s life has become a fairy tale. She’s met Bren, equal parts Golden-retriever-devoted and sinfully handsome. He’s whisked her and her autistic son, Jude, to the crumbling family house he’s renovating. She has a new husband, a new house, and a new baby on the way. Everything is perfect.

Until Jude claims he can hear voices in the walls. He says their renovations are “hurting” the house. Even Elodie can’t ignore it―something strange is going on.

The question is, Is it with the house, or with her son?

And what is Elodie hiding?"

QBS Review:

C.G. Drews has done it again! A perfect adult debut.

It is always so hard for me to write reviews for books I loved because it's like how can you describe the experience you got from reading it? But I will try and probably fail to articulate why I liked this book so much.

The writing! Drews put on an absolute master class of building suspense through language. When you watch a horror movie, so much of the suspense is built from what you hear and secondly what you see, but in a book everything comes down to how well can you describe someone's perception of the scary things around them. I was sufficiently on edge by the end of chapter one. The house may or may not be haunted, but it is without a doubt, scary. Moreover, Drews takes their time giving you answers, slowly weaving in flashbacks until you are finally far enough away to see the full picture. And I love a story that keeps me needing to know more!

This is a true psychological thriller that touches on many heavy topics, so please do check the content warnings before reading. Drews navigates a discussion about the cycles of domestic abuse/neglect/violence through the lens of a mother who is starting to believe her house is out to get her and her son. And they navigate it well.

This story is heartbreaking, devastating, infuriating. The characters make you care for them, but they aren't necessarily likeable. Their flaws are great in number and in impact. And yet I think most people will find something relatable in some part of Elodie's story.

I want to say so much more, but any direction I go from here will result in me giving spoilers, so I will leave it at this. If you like psychological or domestic horror, this is just an excellent read that you will find yourself thinking about for weeks to come.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
